1/31/2024 0 Comments Dungeon crawl stone soup gargoyleOrb of Fire spawned on Zot: 3 and Zot:4 - I thought they only showed up on the last level! First one damn near killed me, second one I used teleport cheese to avoid for the remainder of the game. I wasted way too many resources stairdancing his royal gelatinousness because I had it in my head for some reason that like statues he didn't regenerate his hit points eventually I realized I wasn't getting anywhere and lured him into a corridor instead where I could fight him and his spawns productively. Fun place if you've got the necessary amulets to swap around (I did). This was my first foray ever into the Slime Pits. (Also because I wouldn't have gotten full use out of him unless I swapped to a demon trident->trishula, which would have meant conquering that aforementioned SAN-loss damage formula). ![]() I stuck with him anyhow, because I didn't feel like doing the Crypt and things weren't feeling too hard until Zot:3 or so. I wonder if the Devs intentionally gimp his acquirement routine to encourage new players to pull a Shining One switch. Oka's gifts were, as they almost always are, utterly useless. The flight was nice to have, but the important thing was that it was plus sixteen crystal plate, so I was running around with a 50+ AC before I even went rune-hunting. Kinda literally, since it was laying on the gate to Hell in L:8's boss vault - +16 crystal plate with Fly, rN+, and stealth. Two things cinched this build over the countless would-be staffmasters filling my graveyard:ġ) I did, in fact, pick up a staff of earth from my first scroll of acquirement.Ģ) I found the armor from Hell on Lair:8. It'd be nice if the game could check that for you like (apparently) Angband does. I've taken a look at the weapon damage formula a dozen times, and I still had no real idea how to judge my best weapon of the moment. One thing I learned: I really really hate DCSS's game mechanical philosophy that basically everything "+X" is really "+1dX". I had the idea to start with a trident-armed fighter instead since one eventually wants to be using heavy armor and a shield like a fighter anyhow, and (if I'm parsing the effects of cross-training "enhancement" correctly in v0.15) the early investment into polearms won't be entirely wasted when you switch to staves. I've been experimenting with a variation on the Minotaur Staffmaster suggested by one of the Wiki's character guides - the guide uses a gladiator to start off with a quarterstaff (aiming to learn one Earth spell just to open the school, then maximize the beatstick potential of a staff of earth). Picked up my second ascension today, this time with 4 runes. On my Orb run up, I'm like "Ooh, a Pan Lord! Whew, I was afraid they'd sic more fire orbs on me!"īut. Orbs of Fire: even worse than advertised. I was in the rare instance of having a surplus of enchant scrolls and *nothing to use them on*, because everything I was using was either already a +2 accessory or a minor randart. I did *not* regret the deity switch before the Crypt. ![]() ![]() And you've gifted me every type of weapon other than the ones I have skills for, and you can't even make it a painful twang of regret because they all still don't measure up to Rolandtr. No, Oka, I am not grateful for yet another 10 darts of frost. I credit probably 50% of the run to a lucky pickup of a +4/+11 morningstar of speed (which my brother and I dubbed "Rolandtr") I nabbed somewhere before the Lair, which Oka spent the entire game pathetically failing to compete with. (Gargoyle Fighter of Okawaru -> Shining One). After three years (I think) and countless shattered bodies, I was just messing around with a new copy of v0.13 and its new race (Gargoyle).
